Haunted Places 3: Leap Castle

Leap Castle is sometimes dubbed as the most haunted place in Ireland, it certainly possesses a particularly bloody history. It is located in Co. Offaly, just outside the town of Roscrea. It was built in the middle of the thirteenth century by the O'Bannon clan and it became known as Leim Ui Bhanain or Leap of the O'Bannon's.

The O'Bannon's were subject to the ruling O'Carroll clan. It is recorded in the Annals of the Four Masters that in the early sixteenth century the Earl of Kildare, Gerald Fitzgerald attempted to seize the castle but was beaten back by the O'Carroll's.

Around the same time a fierce and bitter battle for succession ensued amongst the O'Carroll's which turned them against one another. One brother murdered another, who was a priest, in what has since become known as the ÔBloody Chapel' while he was conducting a ceremony.

Another source of evil which may have contributed to the present existence of spirits was discovered in the late nineteenth century. It was an oubliette which is a dungeon which was only accessible from a high hatch in the ceiling. There were spikes at the bottom of the shaft, prisoners were flung in there, if not killed instantly they lay gored on the spikes or were left to die of starvation.

It took workers three cartloads to carry out all the human bones at the bottom. As a result of it's bloody history, the castle gained a reputation of being haunted, it was eventually gutted by fire, boarded up and locals completely avoided it.

In 1659, the castle passed into the ownership of the Darby family, many Darby's became high sheriff's of King's County (present day, Co. Offaly). In the late 1800s, Mildred Darby became involved with the occult and it said released one of the most vile, evil and disturbing of spirits - the elemental. It is said to be a small, hunched figure who appears accompanied by a rotting stench and a smell of sulphur.

In the 1970s the castle was sold to an Australian who had it exorcised, the exorcist stated that she could not rid the spirits but she ensured that they would no longer be malevolent. In 1991 the castle was purchased by Sean Ryan who is undertaking restoration work on it.

Arundel the Spookiest Place in the World

Well I have been to many spooky places in my lifetime, from dark sewers to underground smugglers caves. When I visited Arundel in Sussex, in the UK I could tell there was something different. It was very dark when I arrived so I was feeling quite sleepy and just wanted to get my head down.

There has been many ghostly experiences in the little village of Arundel, all originating from the terrifying story that took place over 100 years ago. A girl and boy that were in love, the girl felt the love so strong but one day her partner decided that he no longer had the same feelings for the young women. She was devastated she didn't know how she was going to go on, all her family and friends said that you will get over this in time, she knew she couldn't, the tension just got too much that one night this young lady strolled down to the Arundel castle and climbed the tower and threw herself off. Sometimes fellow villagers say that if you go to the tower at around 10pm you can see her standing at the top looking for her love.

So as I do not believe in ghost and ghoul stories I planned an hour excursion in the closed tower on my own at 10pm. I have to say I was just feeling abit nervous as everywhere I went in the village people were saying to me "are you crazy?" please do not go up there alone. It was my decision I had to see what all the fuss was about, never mind that Arundel is considered one of the most haunted places in the world.

Well it came to around 9pm, I walked up the big hill to the castle, when I got there I was greeted by one of the 24 hour guards. I made my way in looking around the castle was a great experience it had an ore of untouched tradition about it. After strolling around I started making my way to the tower where the incident had occurred all so many years ago. While walking up the tower steps I could hear a sort of whisper he-hel-help, was it just my brain playing tricks with me? I got to the top with my beloved camera recording everything, I waited getting more and more anxious for the clock to strike 10, it then did I waited and waited and nothing happened, I put my camera around my neck and headed home what a waste of time.

The next morning I woke up and plugged my camera in the TV I wanted to watch and delete some parts, it came to the area where I was walking up the steps to the tower I was very excited because I wanted to see if I was just hearing things, the moment came and bang the camera went all fuzzy I fast forwarded and the image came back when I reached the bottom of the stairs. I was not imagining things it was her spirit controlling my camera, now I will always believe and remember Arundel is the scariest place in the world.

Overcome the Fear of Death

Those few brave scientists, doctors and researchers willing to risk their careers and reputation to come up front with the most helpful and detailed explanations ever as to what to expect beyond the death the physical body, are often ridiculed by their contemporaries and put aside. Even worse too many physicians just emphasize that physical life is all there is, and no consciousness can possibly "escape" the confines of the physical brain, and when the physical brain dies, that's it, no more consciousness! In this great and terrible "valley of the shadow of death" I am simply appalled at the universal lack of understanding regarding spiritualism. So little is known about the reality of life after death, it is shocking.

Haunted Lighthouses - New London Ledge Lighthouse

Located at the mouth of the Thames River, entrance to New London Harbor, Connecticut at the eastern end of Long Island Sound sits the New London Ledge Lighthouse. Built in 1909 on the Southwest Ledge, the lighthouse was originally called the Southwest Ledge Light, but to avoid confusion with another lighthouse in New Haven, the Southwest Ledge Light, the lighthouse was renamed to New London Ledge Light in 1910.

This lighthouse itself is a unique, one-of-a-kind structure with square red brick quarters topped with a mansard roof (a French type of roof designed to make maximum use of the interior space of the attic) and a circular lantern room. To appease the residents who didnt want to gaze upon an eyesore sitting in the sea, the lighthouse was built in Colonial and French architectural style in order to blend in with the large and historic homes on the shores.

The lighthouse was finally built after a half-century of petitions requesting an offshore lighthouse - the first one in 1845 - from mariners and residents stating the dangers to maritime traffic in the area due to the inadequcy of the four buoys in the harbor and the The New London Harbor Lighthouse on the shore. The Lighthouse Board detailed the inherent dangers to maritime traffic at New London to Congress in 1902 and 1903 and requested funds for constructing a lighthouse. The construction was completed in 1909. The United States Coast Guard officially took over the care of the lighthouse in 1939 and still keeps an eye on the place. Most of the stories of the ghostly lightkeeper have come from the Coast Guard crews manning the lighthouse.

New London Ledge is locally famous for the ghost nicknamed Ernie who allegedly haunts the lighthouse. The famous ghost legend Ernie was a lightkeeper supposedly jumped to his death from the roof of the lighthouse after learning that his wife ran off with the captain of the Block Island Ferry in 1936.

Ernie is said to make his presence known by opening and closing doors, washing the decks, operating the light and fog signal, and untying secured boats to let them drift away. Before the station was automated, Coast Guard crews on duty reported frequently hearing mysterious knocks on their bedroom doors in the middle of the night, doors opening and closing, the television being turned on and off repeatedly, and covers pulled off the end of their bed.

The New London Ledge Lighthouse was the last remaining manned lighthouse on Long Island Sound when it was finally automated in 1987. Since then, reports of Ernie's visits have dramatically decreased, most likely because there is hardly ever anyone there. This seems to be a relief to those who were stuck manning the light house. The final day of manned operation shows a log entry reading, "A Rock of slow torture. Ernie's domain. Hell on earth. May New London Ledge's light shine on forever because I'm through. I will watch it from afar while drinking a brew."

There have been investigations at the lighthouse. In the late '90s, a TV reporter from Japan spent a night inside the lighthouse to investigate the story of Ernie, and loud whispering noises were heard through the night, audible on camera. The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS), who have become known by their series "Ghost Hunters" on the Sci-Fi Channel, investigated the place in 2005 but made no significant observations.

Today, the lighthouse is leased by the Coast Guard to the New London Ledge Lighthouse Foundation, partly funded by the City of New London. The lighthouse is used as a maritime classroom, while the Coast Guard continues to maintain the automated light. The group plans to eventually open the lighthouse as a museum and may offer overnight accommodations.

Haunted Ogden

By day, Ogden appears as a typical small town in Utah, but by night, this quiet little community awakens more than its share of spooky happenings.

Ogden was not always such a friendly community. In the late 19th century it was full of opium dens and brothels along 25th Street. Many were connected by underground tunnels that were the scenes of violent acts. In fact, for a short time, Ogden was known as the "murder capital" of the West! Today, walk along 25th Street at night and you may hear the sound of popping noises on the pavement. This was where the prostitutes would drop dried beans from second story windows to attract customers. Some believe many are still there still looking for business.

The Bellshire Hospital, once an old mental facility, has a violent past and has been the scene of many paranormal sightings. Legend has it, the doctor managing the hospital had a reputation for implementing experimental treatment methods on patients. Today people have heard blood curdling screams that seem to come out of thin air, or see figures staring out of the windows. An encounter with a young girl occurred during a recent ghost hunt. Today, the hospital has been converted to an interactive fright theater during the Halloween season.

The Ben Lomond Hotel is a popular destination by ghost seekers. Apparently in the 1940's a woman staying at the hotel got word that her son died in World War II. She returned home, but she must have enjoyed her stay because many say her spirit has returned and haunts the hallways. There are accounts of the elevator stopping at floors where no button has been pushed. The front desk has received calls from room 1106 when no one is occupying the room. If you visit, be sure to request one of the haunted rooms.

The Union Railroad Station was once a temporary morgue where spirit sightings and unexplained events are common. The most popular tale (with many versions), is of a lady in a blue dress who was arguing with her lover. She quickly turns to run away, steps in front of an oncoming train and is killed instantly. The figure of a woman dressed in blue and crying while running across the rail yard has been spotted over and over.

Dead Haven was a popular Halloween haunted house that has its own eerie past. Although it's entertained many uses over the years, the building in the 1920's was a farm implement store located in the wrong part of town. Two apartments across the street burned down, killing 2 occupants, and the area was the site of many accidental deaths and murders. Paranormal experts theorize that there are still wandering souls in the area. Ghostly figures have been spotted and the sound of children's laughter has been heard at night when the building was empty.

Members of Utah Paranormal Exploration and Research spent an evening staking out the corridors of this creepy place in search of hard evidence of a haunting. In one of their recordings, a voice could plainly be heard saying, "Who's there?" Other than some flashlights that suddenly refused to work, and shots of a bobbing light appearing through the camcorder of another investigator, the night was fairly uneventful.

Hauntings Explained

Over the years I have been called to many situations where people believed they or rather their houses were being haunted. I am going to try to explain a little here about the various causes and possible explanations and how I dealt with each situation. Firstly I have to say that not all of the so called hauntings I get called to turn out to be cases of paranormal activity, yet they are still perhaps a little mystical in there nature.

What I am talking about here is the vast majority of cases that involve simple energy and I am talking about energy from people who are here now and not past over. For example I was once called out to a house where the landlady was experiencing huge problems in trying to rent the house out. In fact the house was split into flats and one of the flats was never let for very long with the tenants often saying that there was something very strange about the place.

When I entered this flat I did get a strong feeling of loss and sadness but I didn't sense any earth bound entities. There was a large mirror in the room and a bed with an old side cupboard, the walls were dull and the place felt drab and empty. Frankly I thought, "This lady doesn't need a psychic she needs and interior decorator" who would rent this place. Anyway I picked up almost immediately that a young man had stayed there for some time but was very depressed and was practically drinking himself to death, he would just sit and stare into the mirror. She confirmed that this was indeed the case and that the young man had moved out recently.

I explained that his energy was left behind and this is what was being picked up. So I cleared the place using standard clearing techniques and told her to get rid of the mirror and decorate the place, in fact all the other flats were the same. It turned out that Karma had a part to play here as well, you see there was a family renting the whole house previously, but the landlady decided she could get more money by dividing the house into flats. So she finished this families agreement, now she was finding she couldn't rent out the flats. The moral of this is obvious; karma will adjust itself in all situations.

So what about actual hauntings, do they happen. Sure they do and more often than you would imagine. Generally I find that they fall into two distinctive categories. Firstly there is the case of natural earth bound entities and secondly there are the cases of invited entities, what I mean by invited is that if you play around with say a ouija board or dark magic in any way then you are inviting trouble into your home. Thankfully the latter is becoming more rare these days but it still happens.

In the cases of natural earth bound entities it is quite simple to assist the spirit to pass over, normally if they are causing trouble in any way it is only because they feel their space is being invaded, you see they often don't realize that they have in fact past over. With the help of those in Spirit they generally pass over quite quickly. In the case of the invited entities itÕs a whole different ball game and I normally know what I am going to be dealing with when people say things like "we have already had a Medium round and it got worse" or they say "Our local Priest did something but it didn't help".

You see in these cases more specialist knowledge and action is required. The methods used to banish etc are taught in the Esoteric Orders and often Inner Masters are called upon to assist, you can forget salt and prayers in these situations. One thing people don't realize is that if you play with something like a Ouija board you are opening doors on the Astral Planes that can be difficult to close if you do not have the knowledge and experience of such matters These things are not toys and as the old saying goes, play with fire and you get burnt.

However like I said these cases are perhaps in decline these days and thankfully it is a joy to help some poor earthbound spirit cross over and be joined again with their loved ones, this makes rescue work worthwhile.
