The power of being able to exist in two places simultaneously is called in ancient Kabbalah, “qfitzat haderech.” This term was used by Herbert in “Dune” to describe the Messiah, whose rise to power and the world he existed in was depicted in elaborate detail.

Because Herbert was such an expert in many subjects including ecology, psychology and eastern philosophies, his ability to conjure up an imense and highly detailed reality was quite remarkable. His work was also filled with wisdom and spiritual truths that could really help the truth seeker on his path to higher consciousness. The hero of the book, Paul Atreides, goes through a sequence of transformation into higher states of spiritual awareness and cosmic consciousness while acknowledging our transcendent self that dwells in all beings.

The hidden formula of genuine spiritual enlightenment is supposedly found in one of the phrases in the book, which is: “that which submits rules.” All phenomena in the universe come from one creative force, or one power or energy. The spiritual aspirant, through certain practices, becomes unified with this cosmic force by slowly peeling away his false identity or ego and his attachments to materialism. Eventually, the aspirant fawakens to being fully aware of the entire universe every moment in time. Genuine consciousness of all the events in the cosmos is the result of the awakened being’s understanding and encounters with universal completion. Awakening to the “oneness” that underlies all reality, allows one to experience faculties, clairvoyance, and insight far beyond the common individual still mired in the world of materialism and ego.

Transformation of Paul Atreides

Paul Muad’Dib (Paul Atreides), the leading protagonist of the novel, provides the role model of an advanced level individual transformed and in tune with the greater good. After he was accepted by the Fremen as one of their own, Paul Atreides adopted the name “Muad’Dib” After Paul drinks the “Water of Life” the transformation into the “Kwizatz Haderach” is accomplished. The “Kwizatz Haderach” is a person who can transcend the duality (male and female aspects) of the phenomenal world and find unity with the “oneness” of the great void beyond the relative realms of time and causation. “Kwizatz Haderach” comes from the Kabbalah phrase, “qfitzat haderech” or “short cut” which alludes to the ability of bilocation or capacity to exist simultaneously in multiple locations.

Was Dune a Prediction of the Future?

Many similarities to major events in the Middle East after 2001 and up to 2008 were found in this novel which was written in the early 1960s. Interestingly enough, the dedication of the book read: “Those whose actions differ from the realm of ideas to the kingdom of solid reality. To the ecologists of the desert plains, whoever they may be, in each generation, to them I dedicate this experiment in predicting the future with humility and admiration.”

The U.S.S.R and the U.S.A. were the main superpowers at the time of the creation of this novel. However, the author foresaw the rising power of the Jihad and Islamic extremism taking over the civilized world. Many uncanny similarities to Gulf War events after 2001 can be found. The Caesar who is defeated in the novel is called, “Shaddam” (very similar to “Saddam”). “Arrakis” (which sounds rather like “Iraq”) is the world where the battle for the “Spice m’lange” (oil) occurs. Although a part of the Iraqi Insurgency, there was the ascension of the young Shi’ite leader of the Jaysh al-Mahdi militia (Mahdi Army) in Baghdad and Sothern Iraq from 2003 to 2008 whose followers call the “Mahdi.”

In the novel, which contains many Muslim names, Paul is also called the “Mahdi” which is the Muslim Messiah. According to Shia and Sunni Muslims, the Mahdi is the prophesied redeemer of Islam who will remain on Earth for several years preceding the Day of Judgment and, alongside Jesus, will rid the world of wrongdoing, injustice and tyranny.

Dune Ring Engraving – That Which Submits Rules

“He who surrenders rules” is engraved in Hebrew on the Dune ring. According to Judaism in the ancient Gemmara, there is a story where the Creator, during the time he gave the Ten Commandments to Moses, also revealed future events. Moses was shown an individual named Rabbi Akiva who will be given the key to the mystery of the “Tagim” or crowns which are the fine marks protruding from the tops of the Hebrew letters in the Torah Scrolls. Noticing the humility and purity of Rabbi Akiva, Moses asked the Creator to give the Commandments to Rabbi Akiva. The response from the Creator was to “keep silent – rise within the thought.” As explained in the Gemmara, the word “keep silent” in ancient Hebrew doesn’t mean “shut up!” it really means “cancel yourself.” The Creator meant Moses was to transcend himself and become one with the Cosmic Thought.

Components of the Dune Ring

The insignia of the House of Atreides is the hawk that shows up in the center of the Dune ring. The “Qwitzat Haderach” is derived from the House of Atreides. The hawk symbolizes the transcendent oversoul who contains the universal conception of all events (the big picture) along with the comprehension of the “Cosmic Thought.”

The blackened exterior of the Dune ring is decorated with green emerald stones which represent the black and green flag of the House of Atreides. Compassion and the heart center energy vortex is also represented by the green emerald. The Arabic engraving on the Dune ring, “lisan il gayeb” meaning “The language of the one who came” is a variation of the Arabic nickname of Paul Atreides. The Hebrew lettering “hanichna hoo hasholet” or “That which submits rules,” engraved on the ring, came from the Dead Sea scrolls.

The Dune Pendant

The Hebrew words inscribed on the Dune pendant when translated means, “from the waters shall come all life.” The water jewelry worn by the natives of the desert planet Arrakis inspired the design of the Dune pendant.

The Dune pendant is actually a sealed vessel containing spiritually energized water! The higher energy resonance of the water may have an initial effect on the wearer until the person gets used to the elevated vibration of the Dune pendant. The molecular secret of water, shared by many of the world’s religions, is also imparted by the pendant. The key to all life in the cosmos is inherent within the triangular structure of the water molecules found inside the Dune pendant.

In Frank Herbert’s novel the native people of Dune (where everywhere was extremely arid) revered water as being the key to all life in the universe, and was valued so greatly, it was proudly displayed on their bodies like a treasured gemstone.
